5 Jon Snow Theories Every Game of Thrones Fan Should Know
Ever since Jon Snow’s tragic and sudden death on the season five finale of Game of Thrones, there have been countless theories about his return. Every GOT fan is hoping for Snow to live, so people have come up with pretty complex theories involving his death.
Here are just a few of them which you may see come to fruition in season 6.
- R + L = J
Probably the most common Jon Snow theory is R + L = J AKA Rhaegar Targaryen + Lyanna Stark = Jon Snow. This theory centers on who Jon Snow’s parents really are. Throughout the show viewers have thought that Snow was the bastard son of Ned Stark. Several hints throughout the show lead us to believe that Lyanna secretly entrusted her son (Snow) to her brother, Ned Stark. Lyanna was betrothed to Robert Baratheon until she was either abducted or ran away with Aerys. Rhaegar Targaryen was the son of the Mad King, Aerys Targaryen. The theory suggests that Lyanna’s son, Snow, was fathered by Rhaegar, and Lyanna asked Ned to pretend the child was his in order to protect her son from Robert Baratheon, who would see the son of Prince Rhaegar as a threat and have him killed. MIND BLOWN. JON SNOW IS A TARGARYEN.
- Lyanna had twins – R + L = J + M
Another theory that goes with R + L = J is that Jon Snow’s twin sister is Meera Reed. What happened at the Tower of Joy, the place where Snow was supposedly born, is unknown. Supposedly six men, including Ned Stark, fought three members of the Kingsguard who were protecting the tower. Only two men survived from that fight: Ned Stark and Howland Reed, Meera’s “dad.” If Lyanna did have twins, the best idea would be to split them up so no one would suspect a thing. Meera and Jon have a similar look, and they are the same age.
- Jon Snow will become a White Walker
Some fans believe that the Stark connection to the White Walkers (think Bran – where the hell is he?) proves that Jon will join up with the half-dead army at some point to lead the fight against Daenerys Targaryen and her dragons. Considering the show is full of plot twists and shocking moments, I wouldn’t be surprised if Snow changed sides. At this point anything can happen. However, there is little evidence to back this theory up.
- Melisandre will resurrect Jon Snow
We know that people who follow the Lord of Light can bring people back from the dead. Melisandre would benefit from Snow’s resurrection because now that Stannis is gone, she is in need of a new person to follow. The brief shot we get of Snow in HBO’s year-end video suggests that this theory is true. In the beginning of the video, we hear a Melisandre voice over saying, “There’s power in you. Do you feel it?” Which is something she said to Snow when attempting to seduce him in season five. Melisandre always has something up her sleeve so this theory wouldn’t be shocking at all.
- Jon Snow really is dead
Although no on wants to believe it, there is a chance Snow really is in fact dead. GOT Co-Creator Dan Weiss said it himself, “Dead is dead.” Kit Harington even confirmed it when he said, “This is how it is. If anything in the future is not like that, then I don’t know about it – it’s only in David and Dan and George’s heads. But I’ve been told I’m dead. I’m dead. I’m not coming back next season.” So far that’s two people heavily involved in GOT who have confirmed that Jon Snow is not coming back. If you need more evidence, Director David Nutter confirmed to THR that “Jon Snow is dead.”
