Syracuse FADS presents Biotic Wonders Fashion Show
This past weekend, SU’s Fashion and Design Society, more commonly referred to as FADS, hosted their fall/winter fashion show with the theme “Biotic Wonders” and let us tell you…it was to die for.
Upon entering Skybarn, fluorescent lighting greeted everyone at the front of the floor behind translucent screens. The performance from Outlaws Dance Troupe set the tone with dancers moving to peaceful-sounding music, which literally had us holding our breath as they moved as one.
Friends and strangers alike were looking around and waiting anxiously for the runway walk to finally start.
Mazin Moya, a sophomore studying civil engineering, came out to support Ares Taylor, a fellow volleyball player who was modeling.
“They extended an invitation to their show and I was more than happy to support a teammate and a friend,” Moya said. “I’m fairly new to even the concept of fashion.”
A few minutes later, the showcasing began, with there being 51 looks in total. Each model paced hypnotically as the collection featured details like lacy hanging fabric, lots of frills, extensive layering, and an emphasis on earth tones that felt futuristic.
It was STUNNING. Each designer understood the assignment by creating looks that appeared reminiscent of a time before a modern era.
Each outfit made perfect sense with the theme, with some being right on the nose, including a two-part dress made completely of plastic.
Many found the theme fitting as bigger designers in the industry are trying to become more aware of the consequences, including Yasmin Nayrouz, a friend of two of the show’s designers, Taisiya and Shelstie Dastino.
“I think it’s such a cool idea and super relevant to today’s climate because of this increased interest in sustainability,” Nayrouz said. “Especially with fast fashion. I think incorporating the environment with fashion just brings attention to that.”
Some personal favorites included a crochet piece that was white and grey and included both a sweater and headpiece, as well as a layered ruffle skirt with a woven basket corset top. However, every look was beautiful in its own way and each designer clearly had their own unique expression of style.
