Why You Shouldn't Be Afraid to Rock a Groutfit With Confidence
Throughout the past few years, a term known as “groutfit” has been tossed around in pop culture, referring to an all gray outfit that the wearers cozily engulf themselves in. Unfortunately, these wonderful clothing creations have been the target of ridicule and hatred, often labeled as lazy-wear or even, dare I say it… gross. As a groutfit-enthusiast, I think it’s about time I set the record straight. #ItsOkToBeGray, folks. This is a judgment-free article, and all outfits are created equally in my eyes.
I might be a little biased — gray is my favorite color, after all — but I simply cannot condone groutfit-shaming. Bloutfits are socially acceptable (revered, even), so why don’t the gray ladies get any love? I’m not saying you have to go full on 50 Shades here (unless, you know, you’re into that kind of thing), but know that it’s more than ok to flaunt a few gray pieces at once. Gray is a highly underrated neutral, capable of being cold and edgy or warm and soft at the same time; you just have to know how to own it.
One of my favorite combinations is arctic gray and charcoal gray. Arctic gray is named so for a reason — it’s an icy, nearly white shade that’s a perfect transition between winter and spring (or whatever you want to call this bipolar Syracuse weather). Charcoal, on the other hand, is rich and dark. It looks striking on anybody, and when worn with a lighter color, makes a wonderfully stark contrast. If you’re looking for outfit ~inspo~, try wearing an arctic grey sweater/sweatshirt with charcoal joggers and white Adidas sneakers. It’s a groutfit worthy of Gigi Hadid, if I do say so myself. Do it, I dare you.
And on that note, celebrities know #ItsOkToBeGray, so why shouldn’t you? Just look at Kendall Jenner striding elegantly around NYC in her glorious groutfit. She’s even wearing the same shade, and yet, does she look lazy to you? Does she look like she hasn’t left the house all day? Does she look like she’s been shoveling pizza into her mouth while she watches Parks and Rec re-runs? Nope, didn’t think so. She looks FLAWLESS.
Well, maybe that’s just because it’s Kendall. She is a Balmain model, after all. But you can’t deny the cool, sleek combination of gray she’s wearing from head to toe makes her look like a total badass. If she can do it, you can do it too! Whatever shade of gray you fancy, try expanding it beyond just one piece of clothing. Wear a gray dress and gray boots, or gray jeans and a gray t-shirt — I promise you, if you do it right, you won’t feel “lazy” in the slightest. And justbecause you’re wearing several shades of gray doesn’t mean you can’t throw in a pop of color too. For groutfit virgins, a bold blue statement necklace or a sultry red lip might be just the splash of color necessary to banish those gray-shaming thoughts.
Whether you’re trying to be chic and edgy like Kendall or simply get your feet wet with this trend, there’s 50 shades of gray out there for you to try, and it’s more than okay for you to be gray.
