The Ins and Outs of Minimalism

Leonardo di Vinci once said, “simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication.” And while some people think of simplicity as a boring means of expression, you can’t deny that di Vinci knew a thing or two about timeless design — I mean, he created the freakin’ Mona Lisa.

In fashion, we refer to simple garments, outfits, or trends as “minimalist” (it’s just fancy talk). But it’s important to note that minimalism does not equate to snooze fest. Minimalism is about clean lines, geometry, and sophistication. With this style, you have to completely own who you are because there’s nothing to hide behind. Minimalism is pure, uncluttered, and does not tolerate nonsense — so in other words, you’re a #BOSS.

My favorite way to express minimalism is to wear neutral pieces (think black, white, gray, tan, and perhaps some very faint pastels) with an emphasis on material. For instance, luxuriously soft cashmere sweaters in crisp white, soft leather tan totes, sleek black leather skirts and jackets, and pure gold or silver geometric and uncomplicated jewelry. I let the richness of the material do the talking, while color and pattern take a back seat.

But perhaps toning down the color in your life is just not an option. For those of you that are loud and proud (go you!), assemble a monochromatic outfit in a bold color with sleek lines. Blair Eadie, blogger of Atlantic-Pacific, does this particularly well.

If you’re looking to be playful with this trend while wearing neutrals, dabble with odd shapes and volume. When the colors and patterns are simple, you can afford to experiment. Try styles with boxier shapes, cocoon designs, cut-outs, and origamic elements, but definitely not all at once.

And minimalism can be extended to all areas of your life- your beauty routine, interior design, architecture, relationships, and heck it can even be a lifestyle. But I am not, by any means, an expert in that- give me all the crazy passion you can. I like to feel all the feels.
