Spotify Swipes Right on Tinder

Design by Jena Salvatore Great news for all the music snobs out there: Tinder’s latest update allows swipers to connect their hookup app accounts with their Spotify ones. That means users have something else to consider when swiping, aside from how awful that shirtless bathroom selfie is.

In Spotify’s official announcement of the link up, it said the feature could be a way to "make a little music with someone new." So now that Tinder profiles will show exactly which artists people listen to, users will never have to worry about accidentally setting up a date with a Smash Mouth fanatic.

But if you both dig Fall Out Boy, It could easily be a match made in online heaven.

To start broadcasting your musical appetite, visit your Profile Settings in Tinder to connect your Spotify account. Decide which of your most-played Spotify artists you’d like to show on your Tinder profile, and start swiping to see who shares your tastes.

The concept of sharing music interests in online profiles is nothing new. In fact, this update gives Tinder accounts a faint essence of MySpace. As for the changes to Spotify, you can find "Tinder Music" playlists in Discovery with jaunty titles such as "Pre-Swipe," "Discovery," "Match," "Love at First Swipe," and "Date Night.”

The coolest part of this update is the option to pick out a single “Anthem” for yourself. "It's that one single track that tells your story,” Spotify said. “That one song you can't get out of your head."

In other words, a song that you want potential matches to think you listen to, even though it’s probably not one that you actually listen to. Daft Punk’s hit “Get Lucky” is bound to be a popular choice, but my recommendation is undoubtedly Rihanna’s ballad about finding love in a hopeless place.

Realistically, users aren’t going to share their true music tastes. As if you weren’t judged enough already for being on Tinder, you don’t need to let everyone know that you jam out to the High School Musical soundtrack on the daily. Besides that, the features are still a fun way to break the ice and harmonize with some new people.

So go ahead and update; but be warned, there’s no excuse for hooking up with a Nickelback fan. Ever.
