Artist Spotlight: Still Woozy
Take one look at his album art, watch one of his music videos, and try to find someone else doing what Still Woozy is in the music industry. This up-and-coming indie-pop artist with a psychedelic sound recently dropped his new single, “Rocky”, providing his fanbase
ANOTHER song that puts you in a dreamlike trance.
In addition to “Rocky”, he’s rumored to drop his debut album later this year, so here’s what you need to know.
Who is Still Woozy? Well, if you already aren’t familiar with him through hits like “Goodie Bag” and “Habit”, his name tells half the story. “Woozy” is a perfect personification of his music. His soft, often high-pitched voice combined with spacey, experimental beats and the occasional electric guitar has shaped his unique musical identity. His music makes you either want to get up and start dancing or trip on acid, the choice is yours.
The Bay Area-based artist typically gives us playful, uplifting lyrics, which at times leave us wondering what the fuck he’s talking about. “Well if she had to choose me or her mom, I know I wouldn’t last long,” he says in the aforementioned “Goodie Bag”. I mean, what’d you expect? But at this point in the song, you’re so lost in the sound that the lyrics really don’t even have to mean anything.
Visit his YouTube channel and you’ll find a couple of covers in which Still Woozy puts his own twist on indie anthems like MGMT’s “Electric Feel” and Tame Impala’s “The Less I Know the Better”. If you want to hear stripped, mellow versions of those songs where Still Woozy illustrates his creative process, we recommend checking those out.
The homemade, definitely-shot-on-iPhone-and-edited-in-iMovie music videos add to the Still Woozy persona. It reminds his audience that he’s just like us. At least in his music video for “Window” it seems as if he decided to just record moments throughout his day, grabbed a rake, pretended it was a broomstick, slapped some effects on it, and called it a music video. While it’s makeshift, it gives us all a feeling of comfort that runs common through his discography.
Over the past four years, Still Woozy has compiled an EP and a handful of singles, steadily gaining a loyal following. If you’re in the mood to dance? Listen to “Window”. Need a chill song to bop your head to? Check out “Cooks”. Feeling a little… woozy? We recommend “Lava”.
Still Woozy seems poised for a big year, so jump on the bandwagon while you still can. He may not be making cheap, high school video production class-level music videos in the near future, so add him (or keep him) to the rotation and keep an eye out for a debut album.
