SU Organizations Speak Out
University Union
University Union condemns the attack on our country and our democracy that occurred at the U.S. Capitol earlier this week. This senseless violence was an act of domestic terrorism enabled by white supremacy. It showcased what can happen when power is given to hateful and dangerous ideas and was a stark reminder of the work that needs to continually be done to actively resist this rhetoric and work towards a society that truly values liberty and justice for all.
Syracuse Panhellenic Council
The occurrence on Capitol Hill last week was not a protest, it was a riot fueled by intentions and motives not adjacent with or tolerated by the Panhellenic community. As a collective, we mourn the five lives lost and send our dearest condolences to the families and loved ones impacted. Let us take this time to sit and reflect on the state of our country and our role within it.
Lots of love, the 2020-2021 Panhellenic Executive Board.
Syracuse Fashion and Design Society
The Syracuse Fashion and Design Society sincerely condemn the disgraceful attack that took place in Washington DC last Wednesday. We have been repeatedly disturbed at how quickly deep-rooted ignorance has evolved into full-fledged violent assaults, and what we witnessed at the Capitol demonstrates yet another example of an unacceptable racial double standard. We urge our members and peers to be aware of the vicious and hateful acts happening in society today and continue to have difficult conversations that need to be had. Our organization whole-heartedly extends our hand to those who feel they need it, as we always have. FADS will always be a creative community where all can be seen, heard, and celebrated without judgment.
FYP (First Year Players)
We are appalled at the terrorism, display of white supremacy, and attack on our democracy that occurred at the U.S. Capitol yesterday. We stand with the Black community in our country, at Syracuse University, and across the globe; We stand for the preservation of our democracy. As an organization at a predominantly white institution, we believe that it is important for us and other college organizations to acknowledge the privilege that white individuals have and internalize the ways in which we can combat racism every day.
SU KASA (Korean-American Student Association)
SU Best Buddies
SU Democrats
The Syracuse University College Democrats categorically and totally condemn the insurrection at the United States Capitol yesterday on January 6th. This unprecedented, violent, fascist behavior from white supremacists and domestic terrorists was an attempted overthrow of one of America’s most essential democratic functions--the peaceful transition of power.
The Capitol has not been stormed since the War of 1812, when enemy combatants broke in as an act of war. Make no mistake, what happened yesterday was an act of war on behalf of the President. What’s different about this insurrection compared to other protests is that if those who stormed the Capitol were Black, they would have been shot on the Capitol steps.
We also condemn, in the strongest possible terms, President Donald Trump for his inciting this violence and insurrection; furthermore, we demand that this President is immediately removed from office or that he resign immediately. We also are calling on the immediate resignation or removal, whichever is most expeditious, of any members of Congress who were co-conspirators in this attempted coup.
Many of us as Democrats woke up that morning, optimistic of our future as we learned of the electoral victories of Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff in Georgia; however, our optimism, and the future of American democracy, were quickly put into question. Thus, we stand alongside our fellow Americans who are fearful and in doubt of the future of our democracy, and all we can think to offer at this time is the truth that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be the President and Vice President at 12:01 PM on January 20, 2021.
